Ask what AI runs on and most people say chips and electricity. The quieter answer is water, including ultra-pure water to manufacture the chips, water at the power plants generating their electricity, then more water to cool them once they're racked in a data center. By 2030, AI's water demand could roughly match the drinking needs of the entire United States. Less than 5% of it is recycled today.

Christophe Beck is chairman and CEO of Ecolab, the 103-year-old company you probably know from hospital disinfectant and dishwasher detergent, and which is now quietly in the business of cooling GPUs. He's also a former aerospace engineer who spent time at the European Space Agency. Jennifer asks him how a cleaning-products company ended up inside AI infrastructure, why he thinks communities fighting data centers are right to push back, and what it would take to build one that gives its water back.

Three things to listen for

1. The water bill comes due three times
That’s the ultra-pure water to fabricate the chip, water at the plant generating its power, water to cool it in the rack. Beck's five-year math: by 2030 AI will need the electricity India currently uses and the drinking water the United States currently drinks.

2. The fix is 25-year-old gaming hardware
Liquid cooling was invented to stop gaming GPUs from cooking themselves. Ecolab bought CoolIT to point that same idea at frontier chips, pulling heat straight off the chip, which runs faster because it's cooler and, Beck says, needs no water at all. That's his route to a water-neutral data center.

3. Water and energy are the same problem
Up to 75% of the electricity generated for industry goes to managing water, ie: heating it, cooling it, moving it, treating it. Recycle the water and you recycle the energy. Also worth sitting with: gather every drop of the planet's drinking water into one sphere and it would be just 35 miles wide. Ecolab already projected a 56% shortfall by 2030 between what the world needs and what nature supplies, and that forecast was made before AI.
